Software and Radio Module Updates

Operating System and Cellular Modem Updates

Plum Case routers depend on two pieces of software that need to stay current: the NetCloud Operating System (NCOS) and the cellular modem firmware. Keeping both up to date is what keeps your Plum Case, and the network around it, secure, reliable, and compliant in the field.

What are OS and modem updates?

Two key software components on every Plum Case router should be kept up to date.

NetCloud Operating System (NCOS)

The router’s operating system. It manages core networking functions such as routing, firewall policies, VPNs, Wi-Fi, SD-WAN, security services, and integration with NetCloud Manager.

Cellular Modem Firmware

The software running on the LTE and 5G modem itself. It controls how the modem communicates with cellular networks, including carrier authentication, signal processing, network selection, carrier aggregation, roaming, and support for new LTE and 5G technologies.

Why they Matter

Keeping both NCOS and cellular modem firmware current is essential to maintaining a secure, reliable, and compliant Plum Case and network infrastructure.

Security and Operational Compliance

Firmware updates routinely address newly discovered security vulnerabilities, strengthen encryption and authentication, and improve secure communications. Staying current helps you meet cybersecurity best practices, comply with internal IT policies and regulatory requirements, and reduce exposure to emerging threats.

Reliability and Performance

Updates improve system stability by resolving software defects, increasing uptime, optimizing routing and WAN failover, and enhancing compatibility with NetCloud Manager features. The result is fewer service interruptions, less support effort, and a more consistent user experience.

Cellular Network Compatibility

Carriers continuously evolve their LTE and 5G networks with new frequency bands, carrier aggregation combinations, and optimizations. Modem firmware updates keep your case compatible with those changes, improving signal quality, connection stability, roaming performance, and overall throughput.

Best Practice

Plum recommends keeping NCOS and cellular modem firmware up to date across all deployed Plum Case routers. Regular updates strengthen security, improve reliability, maintain carrier compatibility, and help ensure your network stays fully supported, compliant, and optimized for peak performance.
